Travel time and route
The distance between Jerusalem and the Allenby checkpoint is about 40-50 km. Travel time usually takes from 1 to 1.5 hours, but may increase due to traffic conditions or queues at border control. The trip takes place along Highway 1 and Highway 90, the direct route to the Jordanian border.
The route passes through Maale Adumim and the Jericho area. The road goes through the Judean Desert with picturesque views of the Jordan Valley - the landscapes are minimalist but memorable.
Information about the Allenby checkpoint
The checkpoint is also known as the Allenby Bridge / King Hussein Bridge / Gesher Hussein. This is the only crossing between Israel and Jordan that is outside of Israeli jurisdiction. Important to know: you cannot cross the border in a rented car - you need an Israeli driver. The checkpoint does not operate 24 hours a day, the schedule changes on holidays - check before the trip.
What documents will you need
- Passport (valid for at least 6 months)
- Jordan visa — must be obtained in advance (not issued at the border)
- Israeli visa if necessary (if you plan to return)
- Receipt of payment of the fee for leaving Israel
- Medical insurance (strongly recommended)
- A baggage check and a short interview with an officer are possible
